B] The Issue
For many Kenyan workers, leaving a job can mean making an uncomfortable choice between securing their future and paying for the present. A new retirement survey found that 53% of respondents who left employment or a business with accessible pension savings withdrew at least part of the money, even though 65% of those who withdrew understood the consequences for their retirement and 53% later regretted the decision.
C] The Details
Much of the money went towards businesses and farming, followed by living expenses, property, healthcare and debt repayment, suggesting that retirement funds are often called upon to solve problems long before old age. The pressure is particularly acute in a labour market where informal work dominates new job creation and irregular earnings make consistent saving difficult. Which similar problem exist in many countries in Africa and Asia but also in the USA and Europe.
D] Impact Commercial Reality
Sanlam Allianz argues that discouraging withdrawals alone will not solve the problem, pointing instead to the need for emergency savings, easier pension transfers.
Microsoft’s Nairobi engineering hub was a US$100 million bet on building the company’s global products from Africa, with more than 500 engineers at its peak. Seven years after its launch, the centre is facing closure as the technology giant reshapes its workforce and pours billions more into data centres.
The move follows the shutdown of its Lagos site in 2024 and comes months after talks over a planned US$1 billion Kenya data-centre investment stalled. For Kenya, the loss threatens its ambitions to become a continental technology hub, even as the departure could release hundreds of experienced engineers into a market hungry for talent.
What went wrong with Microsoft’s African engineering bet, and what does its apparent retreat mean for the country’s technology industry? Streaming services are gaining viewers across Africa, but traditional television is not ready to surrender its place in the market. In Kenya, TV revenue is projected to rise from US$332 million in 2025 to US$378 million by 2030, even as streaming grows nearly six times faster, exposing a market where digital disruption has yet to dislodge established broadcasters.
Nigeria is expected to follow a similar path, with traditional television revenue growing alongside a faster-expanding streaming market, while South Africa faces a reversal as viewers and spending shift towards digital platforms. The contrast reflects three different media markets, where the rise of online video is producing very different outcomes for broadcasters and streaming companies.
E] Finally
As EPH we see these issues regarding many countries. The ideal long term solution is to start with the following combined aspects:
- improving financial education as of young age;
- providing understandable financial product content besides formal legal documents;
- creating pension related tax benefits;
- making tax neutral transfers possible;
- creating flexible private pension plan products for informal workers;
- and last but not least to introduce some kind of auto-enrollment.
